Breathe in, Breathe out.
The heart of any car is its engine. Like the human organ, it needs oxygen to function. A more efficient air passage way with less restriction result in increased performance. For a track day event it is recommended to upgrade the restrictive factory air intake. Most manufacturers compromise the efficiency of the air intake to limit the engine noise that enters the cabin. This is more so with turbocharged engines. When the factory air intake is replaced by a less restrictive performance intake, your engine will be able to take in more air which will result in a performance gain. As a positive side effect, for daily driven vehicles, a high performance air intake will also yield better fuel mileage. Design and manufacturing materials are as varied as the car models they’re installed. From aluminum, to plastic and carbon fiber. In some cases, high performance air intakes are lighter weight than the factory setup. At the race track, less (weight) is always more. Air intakes are not one size fits all. Your car needs to be matched to the correct air intake. Performance air intakes that are of the DYI variety (usually a mix and match of off the shelf parts) are oftentimes positioned in parts of the engine bay where they are exposed to high air temperatures which is the opposite of what you want to keep the engine working at its peak performance. You win on all angles when upgrading to a high performance air intake, you get improved breathing on your engine, improved looks under the hood, better fuel mileage and you get to hear more of your engine. At the track where high-speed air is available in abundance, your car will appreciate this effective upgrade.
On the other end of your car, it is also recommended to upgrade the factory exhaust system. Like on the air intake, compromises are made to keep the noise away from the cabin. Efficiency is compromised to better accommodate the diverse markets each vehicle is sold around the world. A high performance exhaust system will complete the cycle of having a high performance air intake. Less restriction means more air will enter the engine and exhaust gases will be expelled more freely. The sound of a performance exhaust system is a personal choice. An exhaust system that generates a greater sound will not necessarily yield a higher performance gain that a less sonorous exhaust system. Velocity Factor is an authorized distributor and installer of the most recognized brands in high performance air intakes and exhaust systems including exhaust systems made of lightweight titanium. Each exhaust system installed at Velocity Factor is perfectly matched to your car and your needs. Your ears will appreciate the enhanced sound and the smile on your face will confirm this to be one of the best upgrades you’ve made to your car. Nothing changes the character of a car like a properly matched exhaust system.
Additional Track Day Upgrades to be considered:
- If you plan to use your daily driven vehicle on the race track, we recommend purchasing a closed air intake system. You still get an improved sound and performance but similar in sound levels to the factory air intake.
- For turbocharged engines, a downpipe upgrade is recommended, even more so if the engine management software is to be upgraded.
- High Capacity Radiators or High Capacity Intercooler for turbocharged engines.
- High Performance intake manifolds.
- High Performance diverter valve or blow off valve for turbocharged engines.
- For turbocharged engines, replacement of factory turbo intake plastic piping.
- Strategic placement of heat shield material inside the engine bay in the proximity of the air intake or turbocharger (when it applies).
